All the many reasons to love them...

Watch Dogs Affenpinschers make great watch dogs. You can trust this breed to warn you to every new sound including knocks on the door and strange noises outside.

Size- Typically this breed will stand no more than 11" high at the shoulders and weigh around 7-8 pounds. Apartment life will suit his exercise needs well as long as another form of daily exercise is provided.

People Friendly- Affenpinschers are people friendly when socialized properly. However, there are certain lines in this breed with a tendency to behave erratically in different social situations and when exposed to unfamiliar animals, noises, enviroments. Plenty of socialization and exposure to sounds should be a priority if you plan to make an Affen puppy part of your family.

Trainability- An early start in training could help your Affenpinscher grow accustomed to obedience, but patience while he's a puppy will benefit the both of you as he grows into an older dog. This is especially true for housebreaking. Consistency in training is a must. Check out our training page for lots of helpful advice for tricks and housetraining.

Non Shedding- If you suffer with dog allergies, be sure to test your tolerance before making a commitment to own this breed. While they are nonshedding, losing very little to no hair (the way that people do) they will still release a small amount of dander.

Side Note:With the popularity of small dogs increasing, so too has the number of breeders, both good and bad. With the hype surrounding many small breeds, so in turn has the population of unwanted dogs become ever increasing. There is probably an Affenpinscher rescue group near you. Why not consider Adoption First.

Have you also prepared yourself for the serious responsibilities of…

Disregarding the Hype- With the hype surrounding many small breeds and the demand for them increasing, puppy mills are big business and dogs are suffering in the most horrendous conditions imaginable. We owe it to them to do what we can.

You can be a part of helping to put an end to the torture. Please read our FAQ page to learn how.

High Energy- Affenpinschers have a propensity for climbing and digging and they are very terrier like (despite being part of the pinscher/schnauzer family of breeds) in spirit and personality. This is a quality that many Affie owners find endearing, but if your prefer a laid back breed, this is probably not the dog for you.

Separation anxiety is common- He will often show frustration by destructive chewing and barking or by having "accidents" on your furniture.

Behavioral Issues- Affenpinschers are well known to be a stubborn breed. When this dog's had enough, that's it. He definitely has a mind of his own and can show an attitude to back it up. Whether you're trying to housebreak him or discouraging undesirable behaviors, like excessive barking or digging, you could very well have your hands full with this breed.

Maintenance Needs-Regular grooming or brushing is necessary to keep an animals coat from becoming matted. An Affenpinscher's wiry coat is no exception. Regular attention should also be given to nails, teeth, ears and pads.

Housebreaking difficulties- Toy breeds are among the hardest dogs to housebreak. You'll need to be very patient with your Affenpinscher and probably clean up several messes in the mean time. Small dogs come with small bladders. We highly recommend these positive training techniques.

Fragility- Toy breeds are fragile. They are prone to broken bones caused by falling, mishandling, etc. A larger dog can quickly kill an Affenpinscher with one quick shake. It's never a good idea to walk this high spirited dog without a leash.

Affenpinschers are not recommended for people with small children (under 6). Even well behaved children with the best intentions can easily injure a dog this small. We highly recommend another breed group (other than toy) while your children are small.

-Health Issues-

Patellar Luxation is a joint condition in which kneecaps pop in and out of place. This is a common complication among many small breed dogs.

Hip Dysplasia is a developmental subluxation of the hip joints which can eventually lead to arthritis and/or lameness. It's causes are genetic as well as environmental. A secondary concern of this affliction is osteoarthritis. According the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, nearly 14% of Affenpinschers are currently affected.

The use of pet steps has been shown to significantly reduce the wear and tear on joints.

Eye Conditions- Affens are prone to early the onset of cataracts as well as corneal ulcers. Eye infections are not uncommon.

Short Muzzled- This breed is short muzzled. Breathing difficulties due to very hot or humid conditions could result in death.
