Have you also prepared yourself for the serious responsibilities of…Finding a Responsible Breeder- Never buy a puppy from a pet store. Please read our FAQ page to learn all the ways that finding a responsible breeder could help put an end to the torture of Jack Russell Terriers and other small breed dogs. Behavioral Issues- Though easily trained, JRT's like to be in charge and need to be taught early (and reminded often) who's in charge. He is a dog with a mind of his own and he is not above ignoring you. They like to run and they love a good chase. Walking him without a harness is not advisable. Shedding-Though they are not high maintenance as far as grooming, both the smooth coat and rough coat JRT's shed quite a bit of hair. Brushing will help to alleviate some of the shedding, but bathing should only be done as needed to avoid drying their skin and taking the sheen from their coats. Snapping- Jack Russell Terriers are not a breed who would be considered patient with small children (under 6). JRT's sometimes see other life forms (such as children) as beneath them. They do not tolerate teasing and ear pulling with grace.
Lens Luxation is a condition in which the lens within the eye is abnormally positioned between the retina and the iris causing pressure on the eye. Symptoms include rubbing and tearing and is painful for the dog. If left untreated, depending on the severity, could lead to blindness. Cataracts are also a common eye condition found with this breed.
Patellar Luxation is a joint condition in which kneecaps pop in and out of place. This is very painful for your dog and very expensive to correct. Any odd movement, yelping or favoring of legs should be evaluated by a vet. Hip Dysplasia is a developmental subluxation of the hip joints which can eventually lead to lameness. It's causes are genetic as well as environmental. A secondary concern of this affliction is osteoarthritis. The use of pet steps has been shown to significantly reduce the wear and tear on joints. Please consider them if you own or plan to own a Jack Russell Terrier.
Myasthenia Gravis- This disorder is characterized by muscle weakness. It will seem to improve while the dog is at rest, but will become apparent again as the dog becomes active. Aspiration pneumonia is a secondary concern in dogs with this disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical. Hypothyroidism Is a condition of the thyroid gland which causes hair loss, weight gain and scaly skin.
There is no heart in all the world more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of a dog. Beetle Loveseat
