Can You Rename a Dog?

Maybe your dog already has a name... Or maybe you just no longer like the name you gave her (we don't judge). In either case, a dog can learn a new name within a few times of being called by it. She may be confused for a day or two, but she'll catch on quicker than you might think.

Renaming a rescue dog is customary. I'm pretty certain that dogs hold no sentimental value to their names. I've rescued dogs and kept their name if it was fitting and I've also changed their names when I thought it was appropriate.

When I brought Joy home, her name was Bella (that's Joy in the photo below). That name didn't suit her in my opinion, so I changed it. She started responding to Joy on her very first day in our home. Every now and then, I'll call her Bella, just to see if she responds... nope.

By the way, if you're checking out female dog names while still looking for the perfect dog for you, did you know most rescue dogs are already housebroken, out of their chewing phase... and even an old dog can learn a new name ♥

Training dog to shakeMe and my dog, Joy. This is her practicing the shake command. One of several that she knows. A well trained dog is a happy dog. You can tell by her smile :)

Training Your Dog To Learn Her Name And Come When Called

Now that you've found the perfect female dog name, don't forget training is a very important part of the bond you share with your dog.

Training your dog simple commands, like coming when she's called isn't automatic just because she knows her name. If you want your dog to do this consistently, it begins with simple commands which are easy to teach and easy to learn.

A well trained dog is a happy dog!

Still Stumped?

Consider a contradictory or reverse name.

Name a white dog Ebony... or a giant rottweiler Pookie... or a tiny chihuahua Slayer!

That'll get ya noticed at the dog park!

What color will she be? What is a personality trait that you expect your new dog will have based on her breed?

Now, just for fun, what is the opposite of that? For instance, 'Pookie' might be a fun name to give a rottweiler. The same as naming a docile poodle 'Slayer' or a white dog 'Ebony' might be a great conversation starter at the dog park.

What does getting this dog mean to you? Does it mean that you'll finally have a walking partner (Waddles), a new road trip companion? How about Rider or Shot-gun?
